The summer holidays are approaching, and with six weeks to fill, keeping the kids entertained can seem like a challenge. Luckily for Londoners there’s a wide variety of things to see and do throughout July and August, making it easier to limit screen time and enjoy trips out as a family.
As the cultural heart of the capital, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has so much for families to explore, from museums and parks to fitness and festivals. And after a day out, what better way to satisfy your appetite than with delicious Indian cuisine at Little India? But before you get lost in our menu, here are a few summer holiday ideas.
Get active
Need to help the kids burn off some energy? Kensington Leisure Centre is offering a host of opportunities for children from 4-17 years to get sporty. Swim School short courses are available throughout August, while ‘Swim for All’ sessions for all ages are open to boost water confidence or simply splash around and have fun. Kids under eight go free and those aged 8-15 can go for just £1.
The centre also has a junior gym for 11-17 year olds and soft play for under 10s.
Go boating
There’s nothing like getting out on the water in warm weather. In spring and summer the Serpentine takes on a unique charm, providing a stunning backdrop for a boating trip. Hire a pedalo or row boat and sail around Heron Island or to the Serpentine Bridge and back, enjoying the views along the way. There are even electric pedalo boats available for those who need a little assistance.
Discover the future of food
Opening just in time for the school holidays, the Future of Food exhibition at the Science Museum is a must-visit for those interested in all things edible. From a 3,500 year old loaf of bread to a beef steak grown outside a cow, you’ll discover all sorts of things about growing, cooking and eating food. Plus, there are plenty of games and interactive exhibits to engage children aged seven and up.
Go wild for nature
On 7 August 2025, Kensington Gardens is hosting free drop-in activities for nature-lovers and budding environmentalists. Celebrate summer wildlife, get creative with nature-themed crafts and embark on a habitat safari to find out where different animals live. Activities run from 11am – 3pm.
Celebrate at Carnival
The 59th Notting Hill Carnival is taking place on 23 – 25 August 2025. Sunday 24 August is Children’s Day, which is aimed at families and has a range of kid-friendly activities and events. Watch the children’s parade, learn more about Caribbean culture and enjoy music from a range of bands.
