The Craft of Carpentry: Drawing Life from Japan’s Forests

Japan House, March – July 2025

Forest covers two thirds of Japan’s archipelago, and the tradition of carpentry there extends back over 1,000 years. Rooted in a profound respect for nature and trees, the craftsmanship of Japanese artisans has enabled temples and shrines to withstand centuries of wind, snow and earthquakes. This exhibition focuses on three core aspects: temple and shrine carpentry, teahouse carpentry and wood joinery. View a full-scale teahouse, interact with kigumi wood joints and discover the scent of native Japanese trees.

Giuseppe Penone: Thoughts in the Roots

Serpentine South Gallery, April – September 2025

Contemporary Italian artist, Giuseppe Penone, has based his practice in the forested landscapes of his homeland. This exhibition showcases his work from 1969 to the present, illustrating his exploration of the interplay between organic and artistic processes. His use of natural materials – from wood and wax to bronze and terracotta – displays the intricate relationship between humans and our environment.
