London is transformed into a glittering wonderland every Christmas, with both locals and visitors from across the world admiring the sparkling lights. This vibrant capital city is one of the most beautiful places to be during the festive season. So whether you’re heading out for an Indian in Kensington or to meet friends for late night shopping, here’s a rundown of the best walking routes that’ll make your outing even more magical.
Oxford Street and Regent Street
If you still need to do some Christmas shopping but want to enjoy the lights at the same time, then start your festive walk at Oxford Street. Packed with famous high-street shops, you’re sure to grab a goodie or two as you admire over 5000 twinkling lights that are currently hanging above this world renowned shopping district. Made from over 300,000 LED bulbs, the display is sure to get you in the festive spirit.
Keep a look out for Selfridges’ light and music show, which takes place every 15 minutes between 5pm and 9pm, as well as the themed windows of John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, House of Fraser, Primark, Boots and more.
From Oxford Street, make your way to Regent Street, which is famous for its sweeping angel lights that stretch across the grand boulevard. These two iconic displays are at the heart of Central London’s Christmas tradition and make a perfect starting point.
Carnaby Street
If you’ve got your walking boots on and fancy a detour, make your way down Carnaby Street. As a pedestrian only walkway, you’ll have plenty of time to admire the quirky decorations that always bring a creative twist. This year’s theme is ‘All is Bright’ and includes giant colourful stars and cracker-shaped light sculptures made from 60,000 LEDs, suspended above the street.
Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square
Continue down Regent Street towards Piccadilly Circus where, again, you’ll see a themed display inspired by the famous Anteros statue (the winged figure at the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain), with glowing angelic motifs and festive illuminations stretching along Piccadilly. From here, you can cut east towards Leicester Square where you’ll find a Christmas market to explore.
Covent Garden
Finish this particular walk at the delightful Covent Garden. Packed with 40 giant golden bells with bows, 12 oversized baubles, eight spectacular spinning mirrored balls and a 55-foot Christmas tree illuminated with 30,000 LED lights, the Covent Garden display is not to be missed.
Kensington
If you want to explore another central London district, head over to the other side of the West End to Kensington. Start at High Street Kensington Station and walk east along the high street where you’ll see plenty of delightful shopfront lights. Turn onto Kensington Church street for boutique displays and don’t miss the illuminated facade of St Mary Abbots Church. Stroll through the festive pathways of Kensington Gardens and continue to the Design Museum and Leighton House. Loop back via the stunning Holland Park.
Kensington highlights also include The Royal Albert Hall which is decorated with festive lights, garlands and seasonal displays, as well as Kensington Palace which has a Victoria’s Childhood Christmas theme. If you get hungry along the way, stop at the Little India curry house in South Kensington.
